Who we are

Southern Fisheries Organization is a non-profit organization situated in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1996 by the National Fisheries Solidarity based in Negombo, Sri Lanka. Southern Fisheries Organization became an independent institution in 2011 but still continue to collaborate alongside its founder institution.

What we do

SFO works with small scale fishermen and their families, which include the women and children. SFO provides funding in the form of loans in order to aid fishermen and their families financially. Additionally, SFO strives for the protection of fisheries' rights, work on the empowerment of local women, and promote sustainable fishing in Sri Lanka.

Our objectives

Southern Fisheries Organization's main objective is to protect small scale fisheries in Sri Lanka.

The following are other objectives SFO is striving to achieve:

  • Poverty alleviation
  • Women empowerment
  • Protection of fisheries' rights
  • Peace building
  • Raising awareness on fishing-related issues
